With the current doom and gloom surrounding the forthcoming energy crisis this winter my thoughts have turned to what effect this will have during the present season. I have no idea of the cost involved but imagine one of the biggest expenses to hosting a match must be the provision of floodlighting. Provided it is not sensitive information I would be interested to know the cost to the club of an average of three hours floodlighting per match With this in mind I wondered whether any representation has been made to the Southern league to lessen the burden by bringing forward the Saturday kick off time to 2.00 pm (or earlier). Even if this was only put into place from the time the clocks change, it would eliminate or reduce the time for the lights to be required. I can't see that this would cause any major logistic problems re travel times for players, fans etc but by reducing consumption would not only help the national energy crisis and also be a welcome reduction to the struggling finances of many non league clubs. I have it in my mind that the savings could be substantial and worthwhile but admit I could be way out!
I believe such a move has already been suggested by the Isthmian league but I'm not sure whether or not it has been implemented.
Does anyone have any comments or thoughts on the suggestion?

Some very good points Onlooker. Energy and travel costs must be of great concern to most clubs at the moment and come the winter I suspect many will be looking at earlier kick off times for Saturday games. We have already seen Walton Casules fold this year and I would not be at all suprised to see more clubs go under also.

I know that Bournemouth Rugby did this before lockdown with their games at Chapel Gate, as it was very expensive even back then.ko times varied from 2pm to 3pm depending on the time of year. Since lockdown Chapel Gate has been bought by Bournemouth University and new floodlights have been installed which I believe are more energy efficient. Presumably the lights at New Cuthbury are also LED and it would interesting to know running costs

Very sensible thinking. Definitely clubs need all the help they can get this season.
