Graham's Match Preview -
Frome Town vs Wimborne Town - Southern Lge - Sat 23rd Nov 2024 3pm
Let me take you back to last Saturday when we visited a team who:
had won promotion through the play-offs after finishing second in their league;
had had a disappointing start to this season and were bottom of the table;
had scored the second lowest number of goals in our division;
had recorded just one league win in this campaign - 1-0 at Gosport, and
had not won a home league game so far.
That team was Marlow, and on a soft pitch, despite twice equalising, Wimborne lost 3-2.
Fast forward to this Saturday when we visit a team who:
had won promotion through the play-offs after finishing second in their league;
have had a disappointing start to this season and are bottom of the table;
have scored the lowest number of goals in our division;
have recorded just one league win in this campaign - 1-0 at Gosport; and
have not won a home league game so far.
That team is Frome, and their pitch tends to be on the soft and heavy side.
You'll recall that last season Danny Greaves' Robins pushed Tim Sills' Magpies all the way before Wimborne clinched the title on that unforgettable final April afternoon at Melksham. Badgers Hill was a real fortress for Frome all season with a W14 D4 L0 record, so it's surprising that, apart from a 2-1 FA Cup replay win over Easington Sports, the vocal home supporters have yet to see their favourites win this term. OK, Kane Simpson left for Merthyr; but James Ollis and captain Sam Teale, now with over 300 appearances to his name, are always an aerial threat; free-scoring Archie Ferris has recently joined from Taunton following his move from Larkhall over the summer; and Curtis Hutson is one to watch off the bench.
The Robins' last four results at home have been Basingstoke 1-1, Poole 2-3 (the Dolphins scored in 90+3), Walton & Hersham 2-2, and, in their most recent game on 9th November, Winchester 0-1. That means Frome's home record is W0 D2 L6, with their overall record being W1 D5 L10 GF 10 GA 32. That solitary victory over Gosport was on the opening day of the season back in August.
Wimborne's W6 D2 L8 GF 18 FA 27 record sees them sitting 13th, although that W1 D1 L6 away record leaves room for improvement. The good news is that Tim's team have started finding the net again - five in the last two games: three against Taunton, two at Marlow. Matty Burrows has struck form with four goals in his last three games. The team's performance at Marlow was a world away from how well they had played to beat Taunton at New Cuthbury. The gaffer will be looking for a reaction from last Saturday, but will he give the same lads the chance to redeem themselves, or will he ring the changes?
How have we fared at Badgers Hill in our Southern League days? To be honest - not too well. Four defeats in our first four visits - three in the league, one in the FA Cup. But last season goals from Harry Morgan and an absolute belter from Matt Neale earned us a well-deserved draw.
There was also a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture in April when 2307 spectators saw Ollis and Morgan score with headers.
Fixtures between the two teams are always exciting and entertaining, and I always enjoy my visits to Frome. Can Wimborne bag a first win at Badgers Hill? Can Frome bag a first league home victory of the season? Or will it be a third draw in three matches? Can you be there to support the lads?
Frome's Badgers Hill ground: Berkley Road, Frome, Somerset BA11 2EH - 43 miles
Admission: adults £12, concessions £9, students £4, U16s £2.
Weather forecast: heavy cloud; 12oC; 90% chance of rain.
