Graham's Match Preview -
Marlow vs Wimborne Town
Southern League Premier South - Sat 16 Nov 2024 3pm
After the high emotions of Arnie's final appearance on Tuesday evening in the Dorset Senior Cup, it's back to the bread and butter business of the league. Both Wimborne and Marlow won promotion to the Southern Premier South last season: Wimborne as champions of Division One South; Marlow through the play-offs after finishing as runners-up to Chertsey in Isthmian South Central.
Marlow's manager Mark Bartley is in his thirteenth season in charge. His team banged in 106 goals in their 40 league games last season, but surprisingly have only notched 12 in their 15 fixtures this time around. They sit disappointingly at the foot of the pile with a W1 D3 L11 GF 12 GA 39 record; at their home ground it's W0 D3 L4.
But dig a little deeper and we'll find that they've had some decent results. At home The Blues have drawn 1-1 with Winchester, 2-2 with Bracknell, and 2-2 with Dorchester; while their home losses include 1-2 defeats to Poole and Gloucester, who scored an 85th minute winner. Their sole league victory was by the only goal of the game at Gosport on 23rd October. Four days earlier they came close to getting a point at Merthyr when Ricardo Rees scored the winner in the 93rd minute for a 2-1 victory - and we know what a good performance that must have been!
Marlow had little impact in the FA competitions this campaign: losing 2-6 at Dartford in the FA Cup, and 0-1 at home to Biggleswade in the FA Trophy.
After recent defeats at Plymouth Parkway (1-2) and at home to Chertsey (1-3), despite taking a first-half lead in both, Tim Sills' team bounced back with their best 90 minute performance of the season to defeat Taunton 3-0 at New Cuthbury last Saturday. Matty Burrows scored a brace, with Will Fletcher getting the third. That leaves The Magpies sitting 13th with a W6 D2 L7 GF 16 GA 24 record; on their travels it's W1 D1 L5. Some of the gloss of Saturday's win will have rubbed off after Alex Rutter and Harry Baker were substituted through injury during the first-half of Tuesday's cup tie with Weymouth. However, Lewis Beale, Jack Lovell and Ben Scorey managed plenty of game time, Cam Munn is available again, on-loan signing Fareed Salifu will want to show what he's capable of, and Sam Jackson will play without gloves! Will the boss give young Finn Richardson another opportunity?
The teams have met three times before: in 2013-14 in the FA Trophy, The Blues knocked Steve Cuss's Magpies out at Cuthbury 5-3 (Mark Gamble, Sam Griffin & Matt Kemble scored, and, yes, Arnie played); there were more goals two seasons later in Southern League Div One with Marlow again winning at Cuthbury this time 3-2; then in the reverse fixture in March, now with Simon Browne at the helm, the teams fought out a thrilling 3-3 draw (Mark Ford (2) and Sam Bayston scored, and, yes, Mr.Wimborne played in that one too).
Both teams will want to take a point or three on Saturday so it's bound to be a competitive fixture.
