Graham's Match Report -
Wimborne Town 0 Weymouth 3 - Dorset Senior Cup Quarter-Final - Tues 12 Nov 2024
It wasn't the fairy-tale ending Magpies' supporters had hoped for as Scott Arnold's 618th and final appearance for Wimborne ended in defeat. After goalkeeper Alex Rutter was led from the field with a head injury with only nine minutes on the clock, to be replaced between the posts by Sam Jackson, it was always going to be an uphill struggle against The Terras. A first-half goal, and two more in the final twenty minutes gave Weymouth the victory their neat and tidy, give and go football deserved.
But for Wimborne the evening was all about Arnie - Mr. Wimborne, a true club legend.
Both managers shuffled their packs from Saturday's league games. Tim Sills made five changes to his starting line-up bringing in Scott Arnold, Harry Baker, Lewis Beale, Cam Munn and Ben Scorey; Academy player Finn Richardson was on the bench.. Weymouth made seven changes, but fielded a strong line-up.
There were early chances at each end: Harry Morgan's free-kick eluded the defensive wall but not keeper Terrell who dived to save; at the housing-estate end Goodship was played through only to be denied by Alex Rutter. Weymouth were awarded a free-kick just outside the area in their next attack. The strike was too strong for Rutter to hold onto; the keeper bravely dived at the feet of an attacker as they went for the loose ball and managed to divert the follow-up over the bar, but received a bang on the head in doing so. After a lengthy delay, Alex was led from the pitch. With no goalkeeper on the bench, Sam Jackson donned the gloves.
The makeshift stopper was beaten on twenty-five minutes. Ward, surrounded by Magpies, shot low and hard into the corner of the net. Jackson made his first save from the goalscorer shortly after, and was then helped out by Billy Walker who cleared off the line during a frenetic scramble. There was a second injury problem for the hosts when Harry Baker went off with a shoulder injury. His replacement, Jack Lovell, immediately tested Terrell with a shot from close-range which was turned round the post for a corner. There was a scare at the other end when Jackson gave the ball away only to retrieve the situation by diving at feet to claim it back. Cam Munn couldn't control Jez Bedford's cross from the right, and Matt Neale fired wide as Wimborne finished the half well.
And The Magpies started the second period in the same way; Bedford found Munn who played Lewis Beale through on the left to test Terrell; another twinkling Bedford dribble ended with Morgan's shot which was deflected onto the post for a corner. After surviving those goal attempts, the visitors began to assert themselves with crisp, fluid, pacey passing moves. Jackson tipped one shot for a corner; the stand-in stopper punched another corner clear; Adam Biss cut out an attack with a strong tackle; Neale stopped another with a long leg; and McCarthy's volley from the edge of the area was well held by the keeper.
However, Jackson's grand idea of being a sweeper-keeper fell flat on seventy-two minutes when he gave the ball away to Bearwish who gratefully rolled the ball into the unguarded net from twenty yards. A third and final goal came eight minutes later when Genesini cushioned a left-wing cross into the net from close range.
And then, at 9:12 pm on 12th November 2024, twenty-one years, one month, and twelve days after his first appearance, came the inevitable: Scott Arnold left the field of play for the last time. It was to a standing ovation; it may well end up in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest substitution at a football match. Hugs and handshakes with players; even a hug given to and received from referee Barber; high-fives with spectators; more hugs with management and players on the bench. It was an emotional few minutes.
As if to signal the passing of the baton to a younger Wimborne generation, 16-year old Academy student Finn Richardson warmed the crowd with a couple of scintillating dribbles.
OK we lost a cup tie, but every now and then in football the occasion is more important than the result. The sight of Arnie leaving the pitch with a wave will live long in the memory.
Scott Arnold, Mr.Wimborne, a true club legend - we salute you, and thank you for lighting up 618 Wimborne games.
