Graham's Match Preview -
Wimborne Town vs Weymouth
Dorset Senior Cup Quarter-Final - Tues 12th November 2024 7:30pm - main pitch
The headline news about this game is that it will be the 618th and final appearance of Mr.Wimborne - Scott Arnold. Arnie announced at the weekend that this is the right time for him to retire.
In last season's DSC final, Hamworthy Recreation (Wessex Div One) defeated Shaftesbury (Wessex Premier Div) 3-1. It would appear that Dorset's big four - Dorchester (Southern Premier), Poole (Southern Premier), Weymouth (National South), and Wimborne (Southern League Div One) didn't consider the DSC as their top priority.
Is it the same this season? Well, Poole's withdrawal to give Wimborne a first round walk-over indicates their thinking. In that first round Weymouth knocked out Portland 3-0, the Terras starting line-up that evening included six of the players who were involved in Saturday's 1-1 home draw with St.Albans.
That point leaves Weymouth at the wrong end of the league table - 22nd of 24. This Saturday they face a tough FA Trophy tie at National South leaders Weston-super-Mare. It's difficult to imagine manager Mark Molesley prioritising this DSC tie ahead of league and Trophy. But he could well use it to give squad players game time, and such players will have an opportunity to stake a claim for a place in upcoming games. Will goalkeeper Billy Terrell, who played with such distinction for The Magpies when on loan from AFCB, be given the opportunity to show his many admirers how he has developed?
Wimborne's manager Tim Sills has fewer options available. Although his team will be full of confidence after Saturday's 3-0 win over Taunton. He'll have one eye on Saturday's crucial league match at Marlow so could take the opportunity to give vital minutes to Harry Baker, Jack Lovell, and Ben Scorey. I understand that our recent loan signing from The Terras, Fareed Salifu, will be eligible to play for us against his host team. Will Tim use the game to have a look at a couple of promising youngsters from the Reserves and Academy? Lots of questions. But one man who we do know will be playing - the one and only Arnie.
There's always a great atmosphere under the lights. But that last appearance by Arnie will make it an emotional evening for players and supporters alike. Let's hope Tim's team can give the legend a winning send off, there will be a result on the night. It's a last chance to watch Arnie in a competitive game. You won't want to miss this one.
Please note that it is a 7:30 pm kick-off and not 7:45 as on Weymouth's fixture list.
There's plenty of parking at the ground in Ainsley Road BH21 2FU, but if you do decide to park on the nearby streets, please do so respectfully to our neighbours.
The Morebus no.13 runs along Leigh Road from and to The Square in the town centre with stops at the bottom of Parmiter Road.
There is a bike park to the left of the players' entrance.
Admission: adults £8, concessions £5, U18s £1.
There will not be a programme.
Weather forecast: light cloud; 8oC but a wind chill making it feel colder; <5% chance of rain.
