Graham's Match Preview -
Plymouth Parkway vs Wimborne Town
Southern League Premier South - Tues 29 October 2024 7:45pm
After ten days without a game, Tim's team face a long Tuesday trip to south-west Devon to face Chris McPhee's Plymouth Parkway.
On a nerve-jangling final day of last season, Parkway held out for a 1-1 draw at Beaconsfield to condemn The Rams to the final relegation spot, avoiding that position themselves on goal difference.
This league campaign hasn't started much better as Parkway currently lie 21st of 22 with a W1 D3 L8 GF 14 GA 30 record. At their Bolitho Park home they drew 2-2 with Taunton, after being 2 down, and lost to Basingstoke (1-3), Winchester (0-3), Walton & Hersham (1-2), and Totton (1-2). However, dig a little deeper and we'll see that their results are moving in the right direction. In their last three league games they lost by the odd goal to second-placed Totton (1-2), recorded their first league win at Chertsey (2-1), and lost by the only goal of the game at fourth-placed Dorchester last Tuesday.
Although it's a different story in the cup competitions where Parkway have won four of the six games they've played. In the FA Cup they knocked out Baffins Milton Rovers 4-1, Westbury Utd 4-3, and Sittingbourne 3-0 before bowing out to National League South Worthing 0-4 in the fourth round qualifying. In the FA Trophy they had an excellent 3-2 victory over Banbury before losing 0-4 at home to Isthmian Premier Chichester City (11th of 22) on Saturday.
A player to keep an eye on is home-grown striker Dylan Jones (19), although Parkway's match report on Saturday's Trophy tie suggests that he may be unavailable. Manager McPhee has strengthened his squad during the past month with the signings of left-back Jack Endacott from Argyle, former Argyle scholar Kieran Edworthy, and, a player who will be familiar to many Magpies supporters, Frankie Monk who has recently played for Weymouth, Poole, and Sholing.
Wimborne have also found some form in recent games. They drew 2-2 in normal time at Gloucester in The FA Trophy, beat Gosport at home (1-0), and bagged another away point at Bracknell (0-0). As a result they sit 11th with a W5 D2 L5 GF 11 GA 19 record; on their travels it's W1 D1 L4.
Ross Flitney has joined Derew Eccott-Young and Jack Lovell on the injured list. However, on-loan 'keeper Alex Rutter will be keen to follow up his clean sheet at Bracknell with another, and Matty Burrows will be available for selection again.
Parkway have had a rapid rise through the leagues. Champions of the SouthWest Peninsula League (Step 6) in 2017-18, they finished 2nd in Western Premier in 2018-19; then were 2nd again when the 2019-20 season was curtailed; before being promoted to Southern League Div One after the 2020-21 season was also curtailed, this time with Parkway top of the table. In their first season at Step 4 they romped away with the title to be promoted to the Southern Premier. Our paths crossed that season: while Parkway were winning promotion, James Stokoe's Magpies were being relegated from Southern Premier to Div One.
Tuesday will be the first Southern League meeting between the clubs. Although we have played one game at the delightful Bolitho Park - it was in that 2021-22 season when Truro were playing their home matches there. On that occasion, after Harry Morgan had opened the scoring, goals in the 88th and 97th minutes snatched victory away from The Magpies who had to battle for the last 30 minutes on a heavy pitch with 10 men.
On Tuesday Sills will want his team to continue their recent good form, while McPhee will be looking for a reaction after Saturday's disappointing home defeat. This game has all the makings of being a close encounter. If you can't be there in person, follow the action on our twitter account as Kyran keeps us up-to-date.
