Graham's Match Preview -
Bracknell Town vs Wimborne Town
Southern League Premier South - Sat 19 October 2024 3pm
The Robins and The Magpies are currently sitting next to each other in the league table. Wimborne 10th from 11 games with a W5 D1 L5 GF 11 GA 19 record; Bracknell 11th from 10 games with a W3 D6 L1 GF 13 GA 11 record. At their Bottom Meadow home Bracknell's record is W1 D4 L0; on their travels, Wimborne's record is W1 D0 L4.
Last season Bracknell bagged the final play-off spot with a W21 D5 L16 GF 84 GA 71 record. Taking a single point from their opening two games - a goal-less home draw with Poole, and a 1-3 loss at Hanwell - would have been a disappointing start. However, since then they are unbeaten in the league. At home they've defeated Tiverton 2-0, and had 1-1 draws with Havant & Waterlooville, Totton, and Chertsey. On Tuesday evening they won 2-1 at Hungerford.
Just over a month ago Jon Underwood replaced Jordan Ive as manager. His most recent signings: midfielder Liam Tack, 6ft 4ins centre-back Jack Matton (on loan from Wycombe Wanderers), and striker Jake Scrimshaw (dual-signed with Weymouth) all started in the game at Hungerford.
As Ian Holloway said of his Blackpool team, Bracknell "are like my tea-bags and didn't stay in the cup for long" (excuse my paraphrase) - going out at the first hurdle in the FA Cup (0-1 to South Park), and FA Trophy (3-6 to Lewes). That loss in the FA Cup would have been quite a surprise as The Robins reached the First Round Proper in both the previous two seasons, losing to Ipswich in 2022, and Cambridge United in 2023.
Wimborne's single away victory in the league was 4-2 against Winchester on Basingstoke's 3G. Although they did win 3-0 at Tiverton in the FA Cup, and drew 2-2 at Gloucester in the FA Trophy before losing 7-8 in a penalty shoot-out. In their most recent game, on Tuesday, Tim Sills' team again defeated Tiverton 3-0 with goals from Will Fletcher, Jez Bedford, and Josh Carmichael. The manager should have leading scorer Cam Munn available again, plus Ben Scorey who made a late substitution appearance after his injury. However, Drew Eccott-Young and Jack Lovell are long-term absentees. Matty Burrows is still unavailable, and Ross Flitney is an injury doubt after damaging his hand on Gloucester's 3G.
Bracknell moved to their new ground at the end of the 2020-21 season. Their "state-of-the-art" 3G pitch was the first of its kind to be laid in UK. The club's website says: "Bioflex, the organically sourced substance used instead of rubber, has been certified by FIFA, ensuring the pitchs compliance with all international standards for artificial football turf. This means that not only is the pitch environmentally friendly, but it also guarantees a safe and consistent surface that is designed to reduce player injuries."
We have yet to meet Bracknell in our Southern League days. Back in 2009-10, when The Magpies were winning promotion from the Wessex League, The Robins were being relegated from S.L. Div One South & West.
This will be another tough test for Tim's team. Bracknell are on an 8-match unbeaten league run. But these are the games the lads relish, and they'll be full of confidence following Tuesday's fine second-half performance.
