Graham's Match Report -
Wimborne Town 3 Tiverton Town 0 - Southern League Premier South - 15 Oct 2024
Manager Tim Sills kicked off his third year in charge with an emphatic victory. Three second-half goals in nine minutes just after the hour mark by Will Fletcher, Jez Bedford and Josh Carmichael, and a clean sheet sealed the points.
Sills made three changes from the team who last played at Gloucester ten days ago: Charlie Philpott made his third appearance in goal, with Jez Bedford and Matt Neale in midfield.
With heavy rain falling, Tiverton made an audacious start attempting to catch the keeper off his line from the kick-off. It was an easy catch for Philpott, and turned out to be the only save he would have to make all evening. The young visitors looked comfortable on the ball and played slick passes through midfield but then found Sam Roberts and Harvey Wright in uncompromising form as long legs and strong heads protected Philpott. Wimborne created a couple of half-chances: Bedford volleyed over after Sam Jackson's long cross was headed on by Fletcher; Fletcher shot over the bar from Josh Carmichael's pass; Harry Morgan fired wide after clever link-up play with Matt Neale; and Joe Ryan had his shot blocked after a promising run. However, on the slippery surface, it was a frenetic first forty-five which won't linger long in the memory.
Things could only get better, and to the delight of the 500 plus crowd they did. The Magpies took on board manager Sills' half-time suggestions and dominated the second-half having fourteen attempts on goal to Tivvy's two. In the first minute a flowing move involving Fletcher, Bedford, Morgan and Ryan set the youngster up for a shot which was blocked - and that set the tone for the rest of the game. Adam Biss raced back to disrupt Tivvy's first attack, then set Bedford away on a counter; Biss combined with Bedford on the right before finding Morgan.
On 51 minutes Fletcher was thwarted when played through, Bedford picked up the loose ball but his effort was cleared off the line, then he hit the rebound over the bar. A typical Sam Jackson charge saw him play slick one-twos with Ryan; goalkeeper Baker slid out to grab a through ball off Ryan's toes. Pressure was building. And after Swann had fired the visitors' only attempt of the half over the bar, the hosts took the lead on 63 minutes.
Fletcher raced onto a back-pass through the inside-left channel, rounded the keeper, and slotted into the empty net from an acute angle. Two minutes later the lead was doubled. Jackson fired into the box, Morgan's miscued shot fell to Bedford who netted from five yards. On 71 minutes, Bedford's twinkling run was stopped illegally just outside the box to the left of the "D". Referee Bloor marched the defensive wall back a full ten yards; Carmichael sized up his options then fired low, hard, and accurately to beat Baker. After a meagre four goals in six league and cup games at New Cuthbury this season, those three goals in nine minutes had us all smiling.
Wimborne controlled the rest of the game, giving manager Sills the opportunity to bring on all five substitutes, including Ben Scorey for his first appearance for a month.
After that disappointing first-half, Wimborne were unstoppable in the second. The platform was created by a solid performance from the back four with Carmichael bossing the area in front of them. Harder challenges lie in wait, but four wins and a draw from six league games at home is a great start on our return to Step 3. This win lifts us to 10th in the league table; only the top three have won more games.
