Graham's Match Preview -
Wimborne Town vs Tiverton Town
Southern League Premier South - Tues 15th October 2024 7:30 pm
This league encounter will be the second time that The Magpies have faced The Yellows this season. The first encounter was at Ladysmead on the last day of August when Wimborne won an FA Cup First Round Qualifying tie 3-0.
In 2023-24 Tivvy finished 14th in the Southern Premier, 4 points clear of the relegation spots. Their away record was W6 D3 L12. This season they're currently sitting 19th with a W2 D2 L6 GF 7 GA 22 record. On their league travels they lost their first three games without scoring: Merthyr (0-6) - does that score sound familiar? - Bracknell (0-2), and Gosport (0-3) before they opened their away account with a 2-1 win at Frome. That was the start of a mini revival as it was followed by a home 2-1 win over Winchester, a narrow 0-1 loss to second-in-the-table Gloucester, and a goal-less home draw with Dorchester in the FA Trophy, before losing out on penalties. Then on Saturday they lost 0-4 at Supermarine with Michael Elias-Fernandes, he of the stuttering penalty run-up, firing a first-half twelve-minute hat-trick, the third of which was a penalty.
Four of Tivvy's seven league goals have been scored by striker Joe Parker. Two other experienced players to look out for are defender Niall Thompson, and midfielder Asa Hall.
Leigh Robinson's team fell at the first hurdle in both FA competitions at Ladysmead. In the FA Cup it was Tim's Magpies who prevailed 3-0 with a brace from Will Fletcher and a third from Matt Neale. In the FA Trophy, Tivvy, like Wimborne, went out on penalties: 4-5 to Dorchester after a goal-less ninety-plus minutes. Not scoring in either cup game means Tiverton have failed to score in eight of their twelve games this season.
Wimborne don't have a much better scoring record. They've also failed to score in seven of their thirteen league and cup games. Only Frome, with five, have scored fewer league goals than Tiverton and Wimborne. However, The Magpies have a decent league record at New Cuthbury: Hanwell (W 1-0), Walton & Hersham (L 0-4), Hungerford (W 2-1), Supermarine (D 0-0), and Gosport (W 1-0). Wimborne are currently eleventh with a W4 D1 L5 GF 8 GA 19 record.
Our two leading scorers - Cam Munn and Will Fletcher - both found the back of the net at Gloucester in the Trophy, our most recent game, when Jez Bedford made a welcome return off the bench. However, Matty Burrows will again be unavailable.
Can we learn anything from past encounters of the Southern League kind when Tivvy came calling? In Division One at Cuthbury, Wimborne beat Tivvy four times, and lost twice. In the Premier Division, Wimborne have won twice and lost once. The last fixture, in January 2022, was a night to remember: Dan Bartlett gave us the lead on 20 minutes; ten minutes later 'keeper Gerard Benfield was sent off for something he said; then makeshift keeper Billy Maybury kept a clean sheet as every save and clearance was cheered to the rafters as James Stokoe's bottom-of-the-table side hung on for the three points.
Both teams will want to get something from this fixture. Matches under the floodlights always have a special atmosphere. And games between us and Tivvy are rarely dull. So wrap up warm, and come on down - after all, it's what Tuesday evenings were made for!
