Graham's Match Preview -
Wimborne Town vs Gosport Borough
Southern League Premier South - Tues 24th September 2024 7:30 pm
This will be Gosport's first league visit since December 2021. Then goals by Harry Morgan and Curtis Young gave James Stokoe's team their first-ever three pointer at New Cuthbury.
Saturday's fixtures resulted in goal-less draws for both teams: Wimborne at home to Supermarine; Gosport on their long visit to Merthyr. The Borough are in a good vein of form and have now gone eight games unbeaten in league and FA Cup.
After reaching the play-offs last season, Gosport's hopes will have been high for this season. An opening day home defeat by Frome (0-1) followed by a 2-5 loss at Hungerford three days later wasn't a good start. Since then things have greatly improved: a 2-0 win at Winchester, a 3-3 home draw with high-flying Basingstoke; a 1-1 draw at Sholing; a 3-0 victory at Privett Park over Tiverton, and that goal-less draw at Merthyr have lifted Borough up the table. They now sit 14th with a W2 D3 L2 GF 11 GA 10 record. Alfie Stanley has twice bagged a brace of goals, and Asher Yearwood has three to his credit. And Borough are still in the FA Cup after last Tuesday's 2-0 replay win at Gloucester. In their last five League and FA Cup games, Gosport have kept four clean sheets. Oh, and they've recently signed a new keeper - the experienced Ryan Gosney.
Wimborne are currently two places and one point above Tuesday's visitors, albeit having played a game more. The four league games played at the Wyatt Homes Stadium have brought victories over Hanwell (1-0) and Hungerford (2-1), defeat by Walton & Hersham (0-4) and Saturday's draw with Supermarine. And there was the FA Cup loss to Weston (0-2). There's no doubt that the talent in The Magpies' squad will create chances, finishing them off has proved problematic. The defence looks really solid as shown by limiting Supermarine to just one goal attempt on Saturday.
Since leaving the Wessex League as Champions at the end of the 2006-07 season, Gosport's history has been both dramatic and traumatic. Five season in Southern League Division One; straight through Southern Prem; four seasons in Conference South / National League South; then a return to the Southern Prem where they remain, finishing fourth last season. Add in an FA Trophy final appearance in 2014, and an FA Cup run to the First Round Proper the following season - Gosport's recent history has been dramatic indeed! And traumatic? Lots of financial issues, winding-up orders, transfer bans, unfulfilled new backers, and more.
How have The Magpies fared against Borough during our Southern League days? In our first two seasons in the League, in Division One, we won one and drew the second. Then when we caught up with The Borough in the Premier Div we won two and lost one. There's never been more than one goal between the teams in our home games.
Tuesday's encounter has all the makings of being another close battle. And that's where we supporters come in. Gosport's followers made a difference at Gloucester last Tuesday, so expect them to be vociferous again. We need to match that and get behind our boys. There's always a special atmosphere under the floodlights, so come on down and cheer Tim's team on.
There's plenty of parking at the ground in Ainsley Road BH21 2FU, but if you do decide to park on the nearby streets, please do so respectfully to our neighbours.
