Graham's Match Preview -
Wimborne Town vs Swindon Supermarine
Southern League Premier South - Sat 21st September 2024 3pm
After last Saturday's exit from the FA Cup, it's back to the bread and butter of the league with two games at the Wyatt Homes Stadium in three days. First up, on Saturday, it's our friends and rivals from Swindon.
Last season Marine made a disastrous start, losing all of their first seven games, resulting in a change in management. Former player Stuart Fleetwood took the reins almost exactly a year ago. A first point came in game no.10, and a first victory in game no.15 - remarkably a 2-1 home win over champions-to-be Chesham. Even more remarkably, given that four teams were relegated, Fleetwood steered his squad to safety with a final day three points.
Fast forward to this season, and Marine supporters will have feared a deja vu as their team lost their first three league games: Sholing 1-2, Basingstoke 0-3, and Hanwell 0-1. A point at home to Havant & Waterlooville (1-1) stopped the run, then victories over Hungerford (2-0), and Poole (5-0) brought the smiles back. However, a 1-5 thumping by Merthyr on Saturday will have been a jolt. No doubt manager Fleetwood will be looking for a reaction from his lads on Saturday. Marine are currently 16th with a W2 D1 L4 GF 10 GA 12 record. In their last four games, four players have scored twice: Michael Elias-Fernandes, Gabriel Reivers, David Sims-Burgess, and Harry Williams.
In their first season back in the Southern Prem, Wimborne have made a decent start and are sitting two points and six places higher with a W3 D0 L4 GF 7 GA 13 record. Defeats by league leaders Totton (0-4), 2nd-placed Walton & Hersham (0-4), 3rd Gloucester (0-1) and 9th Poole (0-1) have been offset by wins over 7th Hanwell (1-0), 17th Winchester (4-2), and 18th Hungerford (2-1). Cam Munn has five league goals to his credit.
The Magpies and Marine were together in Southern League Division One for six seasons from 2012-13 onwards. At Cuthbury, Wimborne won four times, and lost twice. On our travels we won three and lost three. The first draw between the teams came in the 2017-18 play-off final which ended goal-less before Marine won the penalty shoot-out 4-3 to gain promotion. However, Wimborne were to join them in Premier South when Shaw Lane (Barnsley) folded, and we were promoted having the best points and goals per game record. In the Premier Division Marine have the better record in head-to-head matches, winning four to our one.
With Harrys Baker and Morgan making first starts against Weston, and Lewis Beale coming off the bench for a first appearance, manager Tim Sills' injury worries are getting less although Jack Lovell and Drew Eccott-Young are long-term absences, and Ben Scorey must be a doubt after going off with a shoulder injury on Saturday.
Come on down and get behind the boys. After all, it's what Saturday afternoons were made for.
There's plenty of parking at the ground in Ainsley Road BH21 2FU, but if you do decide to park on the nearby streets, please do so respectfully to our neighbours.
The Morebus no.13 runs along Leigh Road from and to The Square in the town centre twice an hour with stops at the bottom of Parmiter Road.
There is a bike park to the left of the players' entrance.
Admission: adults £14, concessions £8, U18s £5, U13s £2.
A printed programme (it's another whopper) will be on sale.
Weather forecast: sunny intervals; 20oC; 30% chance of rain.
