Graham's Match Preview -
Wimborne Town vs Weston-super-Mare
Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying - Sat 14th September 2024 3pm - winners £3375 losers £1125
Ah - the magic of the FA Cup! A home draw against a team in a higher division is what every club wants - and that's just what's lined up for us on Saturday. However, it will be tough for Wimborne as Weston-super-Mare are going well in their second season back in National South.
Manager Scott Bartlett's Seagulls are currently flying high in fourth spot with a W5 D1 L2 GF 13 GA 8 record. Those 2 losses came in the opening two fixtures of the season. They then went on a five-game winning run: Chesham (last season's Southern Premier South champions) 2-1; Chelmsford 2-0; Maidstone 1-0; Hornchurch 3-2; and Slough 2-0; followed by a goal-less draw at St.Albans last Saturday. Luke Coulson is a striker on form with five to be joint top of the division's sharp shooters. Fellow striker Nick McCootie is a name familiar to many of us.
After a four year absence, Weston returned to National South at the end of the 2022-23 season when they were champions of Southern Premier South. Last season, their first back at Step 2, The Seagulls finished 13th of 24. Bartlett's Assistant is Scott Rogers who previously managed Tiverton.
Wimborne have made a decent start on their return to Step 3 with four wins and four losses in league and cup. Victories, in chronological order, over Hanwell (1-0 at home), Winchester (4-2 away), Tiverton (3-0 away in the FA Cup), and, last Saturday, Hungerford (2-1 at home). The defeats have been by teams sitting 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 8th in the embryonic league table: Totton (0-4 away on Tuesday), Walton & Hersham (0-4 at home), Gloucester (0-1 away), and Poole (0-1 away). Cam Munn has found the net five times, and Will Fletcher three.
How have The Magpies fared against The Seagulls in previous seasons? Unfortunately not very successfully in the FA Cup with Weston winning all four ties, the last of which was 3-1 in Somerset twenty-two seasons ago. However, in 2021-22 under James Stokoe, we won 2-1 at Weston in the FA Trophy. In league games, all in Southern Premier South, the teams have met three / four times, with Weston winning each time and Wimborne failing to score in any of them. Three games were completed, the fourth was abandoned after 37 minutes due to the pitch at New Cuthbury being waterlogged with the visitors leading 3-0.
Manager Tim Sills' selection options this season have been limited by a string of injuries, but Ben Scorey and Harry's Baker and Morgan are available again. Club Captain Scott "Mr.Wimborne" Arnold became the Club's all-time appearance maker (617) when he came off the bench on Tuesday at Totton.
Whichever way we look at the statistics behind Saturday's cup-tie, it's a tough ask for Tim's team. But the FA Cup is full of upsets in both Qualifying and "Proper" Rounds - Totton losing at Westbury two weeks ago is a prime example. Last season we were beaten by Torquay at this stage of the competition on a memorable September afternoon. What will happen this time? The best way of finding out is to be there. Weston don't expect to bring many followers, so our support could be a factor. See you there!
If the scores are level at the end of normal time then there will be a replay.
There's plenty of parking at the ground in Ainsley Road BH21 2FU, but if you do decide to park on the nearby streets, please do so respectfully to our neighbours.
