Graham's Match Preview -
Tiverton Town vs Wimborne Town - Sat 31 Aug 2024 3pm
FA Cup First Round Qualifying - winners £2,250, losers £750
Ah, the magic of the FA Cup.
It's at this round of the competition when Step 3 teams, like Tiverton and, this season, Wimborne, enter. Win this tie and you start dreaming of being drawn with a big name from National South, maybe Torquay or Weymouth, in the next round. Does all this sound familiar? It should - last season we were also drawn away to Tivvy in this round after beating Paulton Rovers. We won 1-0 at Ladysmead, and then drew Torquay United at home, losing 0-3 in front of over 1800 spectators.
We asked Club Historian Ken Fergus whether we'd faced Tiverton in the FA Cup before last season. Magpies supporters of a nervous disposition might want to skip to the next paragraph. Ken told us: "Tiverton away in the FA Cup holds some very bad memories! The 1997/98 2Q score was Tiverton Town 11 Wimborne Town 1. I think it was 7-0 at half-time. It was the only appearance in goal for WTFC of Alex Westwiter." Ken added: "The slightly better news is that, in 2008-09 1Q at Cuthbury, after beating Dawlish Town and Odd Down in the previous rounds, we only lost 1-0."
In the last eight years the news has got much better for us in FA competitions at Ladysmead. In the FA Trophy in 2016-17 we won 1-0, and repeated that score and result last September in the FA Cup when Harry Baker bagged the all important goal in time added-on.
Both clubs have fulfilled the non-league dream of reaching the FA Cup first round proper: Wimborne once - in 1982-83 against then league team Aldershot Town; Tiverton seven times during the nineties and noughties (their first time was also against The Shots). And both teams have won the FA Vase at (old) Wembley - Martyn Rogers' Tivvy winning and retaining the trophy in 1998 and 1999.
In the Southern League, Div One South & West and Premier South, we've visited Ladysmead for league games ten times: we've won once, drawn three, but lost six. The last season the two teams were in the same division, 2021-22, both teams won their home game 1-0.
In 2023-24 Tivvy finished 14th in the Southern Prem, 4 points clear of the relegation spots. Their home record was W8 D7 L6, with an average attendance of 283. This season they've lost at Merthyr (0-6), drawn at home with Dorchester (1-1), lost at home to Chertsey (2-3), lost at Bracknell (0-2), before a goal-less draw at Ladysmead with Plymouth Parkway on Bank Holiday Monday. Their three and only league goals have all been scored by striker Joe Parker. A striker who played against us last season was Leighton Thomas when at Cribbs. Two experienced players you may spot are defender Niall Thompson, and midfielder Asa Hall. But you'll definitely spot goalkeeper Joel Manning - he's 6ft 6ins tall.
Wimborne started this league campaign with wins over Hanwell (1-0) and Winchester (4-2) with Cam Munn bagging four of those goals. Since then we've failed to find the net losing 0-1 at Gloucester, 0-4 at home to Walton & Hersham, and 0-1 at Poole on Monday. Manager Tim Sills will be hoping for good news about those on his long injury list, but one player definitely missing will be Billy Walker.
Managers Leigh Robinson and Tim Sills and their teams will relish not having the pressure for league points, and will want to be in the draw for the next round, so this has the makings of being an exciting cup-tie. If you can get there, Tim's team will appreciate your support. COYM!
If the scores are level at full-time there'll be a replay at our Wyatt Homes stadium on Tuesday.
