Graham's Match Preview -
Poole Town vs Wimborne Town
Southern League Premier South - Bank Holiday Monday 26 August 2024 3pm
There are many benefits for the Club of being back in the Southern Premier at Step 3. One of those is that we again have local league derbies with Dorchester, Poole, and Totton, and none come bigger than when we cross the River Stour to play The Dolphins, as we do on Monday.
The last time we played a league match at Tatnam was on New Year's Day in 2022. Before the game there was applause in memory of our own Kevin Hart. Forty-five minutes later there was more applause from the 1067 spectators as our skipper Dan Strugnell was carried off on a stretcher with a career-ending knee injury. It was a disastrous first-half for The Magpies as Poole's Will Spetch scored a hat-trick, and Bouwe Borsma was sent off. Curtis Young pulled one back after the interval.
The return game at New Cuthbury in April also saw Poole win by two, this time 4-2, in front of 1002 spectators. Although Wimborne were doomed to relegation, and Poole would finish tenth to miss out on the play-offs, it was a thrilling game of six goals, 25 goal attempts, a substitute goalkeeper, and 2 red cards (Tony Lee and John White). From that game, Scott Arnold, Lewis Beale, and Jez Bedford are the only squad members still with WTFC.
Both Wimborne and Poole have different managers now. Tim Sills guided The Magpies to the Division One South Championship and promotion last season; Steve Tully was The Dolphin's fourth manager in 2023-24, and, with Luke Burbidge as his Assistant, has recruited well over the summer, including the experienced Charlie Davis and Jake McCarthy.
With the two grounds just seven miles apart, it's not surprising that a number of players have worn the colours of both teams. Oakley Hanger and Jack Hoey moved to Poole in the summer, joining Toby Holmes and Billy Lowes, and have been joined by Antonio Diaz, Luke Holmes, and goalkeeper Cameron Plain. Harvey Wright moved in the other direction to join Jez Bedford who has notched up over 100 appearances for both teams, and Will Fletcher who has also been at Tatnam.
Poole's first four league games this term have been: an opening day goal-les draw at Bracknell; a 1-0 home win over relegated Taunton, courtesy of Charlie Davis's late goal; a 0-1 home loss to Totton; and, on Saturday a come-back 2-1 win at Marlow.
Wimborne started with victories over Hanwell (1-0) at home, and Winchester (4-2) away, before a 0-1 reverse at Gloucester, and a 0-4 loss at New Cuthbury against Walton & Hersham on Saturday. Cam Munn is our leading scorer with four.
Looking back in time, the teams have met ten times in the Southern League, and none of them ended level. In Division One, Poole twice did the double: in the 2011-12 season 1-0 and 3-1, and in the 2012-13 season 2-0 and 1-0 - that season the Dolphins were promoted as champions. League battles resumed in 2018-19 in the Premier Division, Poole winning 4-0 at (old) Cuthbury, before Wimborne won 5-2 at Tatnam. In the expunged 2019-20 season, Poole won 3-1 at Tatnam on a hot August Bank Holiday, before Wimborne won 2-1 at (old) Cuthbury. Then, as mentioned above, Poole did the double the last time the two teams were in the same division. The Dolphins have also come out on top in the two most recent Dorset Senior Cup ties between the teams: in December 2022 they won 4-3 on penalties after a 4-4 draw at New Cuthbury; and in March last season they won 2-1 on Wimborne's 3G pitch.
So the scene is set for the first ElStourco derby for three seasons. It'll be fast, it'll be furious, it'll be feisty, it'll be a feast of flowing football. You won't want to miss this one. Come on you Maggies!
Venue: School Lane, Oakdale BH15 3JR
Admission: adults £12; concessions £8, U18s £5; accompanied U13s £1; family ticket £20 (one or two adults accompanied by one or two U16s).
Poole have a very good printed programme, as you'd expect as it's produced by our programme editor James Aldham.
Weather forecast: sunny intervals; 19oC; 10% chance of rain.
