Graham's Match Report -
Wimborne Town 0 Walton & Hersham 4 - Southern League Premier South - 24 Aug 2024
Walton and Hersham showed what a good footballing side they are by scoring twice in each half to overwhelm Wimborne on a showery, sunny Saturday afternoon.
Manager Tim Sills made one change: Connor Cocklin starting in central defence.
For five minutes the two teams passed the ball around on the super-looking surface. Then Wimborne burst into life: Matt Neale found Matty Burrows wide on the right, the winger cut inside for his shot to be blocked for a corner; Connor Cocklin rose highest to Neale's delivery and thump his header against the cross-bar; in the next minute Neale's free-kick rebounded off the defensive wall for Cocklin to have his shot cleared off the line; next, Cam Munn rolled Will Fletcher's grubber cross agonisingly wide; visiting keeper Barker dived bravely to punch another Neale free-kick clear, and took two attempts to grab Josh Carmichael's cross from the left.
The visitors seemed content to let Wimborne keep possession in the middle of the park. Then, when a pass was misplaced, or a ball miss-controlled, they countered at pace with centre-forward Rogalski at the fulcrum of their attacks bringing speedy, tricky wingers into play who twisted, turned, and threw dummies all across the penalty area. On thirty-three minutes, Burrows jinking run drew another corner; another fine Neale delivery; another towering header by Cocklin but this time over the bar. Two minutes later, at the other end, a fluent move down the left brought Owusu into the penalty area with the ball glued to his boots only for a lingering leg to illegally stop him. Well-positioned referee Farr immediately pointed to the spot, and Owusu smashed the kick past Ross Flitney.
On forty-one minutes Wimborne fashioned a great chance to get back on terms. Munn's clever through ball left Burrows one-on-one with Barker but the big stopper got enough on the ball to allow a defender to clear. Four minutes later and The Swans doubled their lead. Captain Jones slid a perfectly-weighted ball behind Wimborne's back-line, the ball was pulled back and Nuur fired home.
In the first-half the visitors had scored twice from their five goal attempts; Wimborne had been unable to find the net from their eight.
The match was effectively ended as a contest eight minutes after the break. The Swans won a battle for the ball on the half-way line, sent Powell racing down the right-wing to fire across the goal to the far post where Rogalski cushioned his header into the net. Munn nearly pulled one back just after the hour mark, but, after dispossessing the keeper, his lob into the unguarded net drifted wide. On sixty-seven minutes a visiting attacker knocked the ball past Billy Walker and ran into him. Referee Farr viewed the incident differently, produced his yellow card, and as it was Billy's second of the game, sent the defender for first dibs of the shower gel.
Playing with confidence, and against ten men, The Swans managed the game, and managed to create space for Thompson to finalise the scoring as the clock ticked over into time added-on.
Walton and Hersham looked a very good side, and deserve to be among the division's front runners. They've scored three against Marlow, five against Merthyr, and now four against Wimborne. Goals win matches, and this team score them. Wimborne matched the visitors on chances, but didn't take any of them.
Next up it's Poole on Monday - now that would be a good time to hit the back of the net again!
