Graham's Match Preview -
Winchester City vs Wimborne Town
Southern League Premier South - Weds 14 August 2024 7:45pm
As Winchester's new 3G pitch is not yet ready, please note that this fixture will be played at Winklebury, Basingstoke Town's home 3G pitch, and on Wednesday 14th instead of Tuesday 13th.
Winchester's pre-season results:
- Cowes Sports 1 - 3 Citizens
- Shaftesbury 0 - 3 Citizens
- Ascot 0 - 1 Citizens
- AFC Stoneham 1 - 1 Citizens
- Didcot 2 - 2 Citizens
- Bashley 2 - 6 Citizens
- Salisbury 3 - 1 Citizens, and finally
- Chichester 0 - 3 Citizens.
In their opening league game on Saturday, Winchester drew 1-1 at Marlow. Trevor Caborn gave the visitors the lead just before the interval; The Citizens created but spurned a number of good chances before the hosts equalised on 84 minutes; and in a tense finish City had Ollie Griggs sent off in time added-on. Unfortunately Dan Bartlett, now playing for The Citizens, was carried off in the first-half with a shoulder injury. We wish Barts a speedy and full recovery.
This is The Citizens third season in the Premier South after winning promotion from Division One South via the play-offs in 2021-22. In 2022-23 they finished 16th of 22 with a W12 D12 L18 GF 56 GA 72 record - at home it was W5 D7 L9. Last season they improved to 11th with a W15 D 12 L15 GF 63 GA 67 record - at home it was W8 D7 L6. They had two draws against Wimborne's opponents last Saturday, Hanwell Town - 4-4 away in October; 1-1 at home in February. A couple of notable results were winning 2-1 at champions Chesham in September, 2-0 at Basingstoke in January, and 4-0 at home against The Dolphins in March.
Manager Craig Davis's squad includes some former Magpies: Barts, Kieran Douglas, Ollie Griggs, and Jordan Rose. Goalkeeper Luke Cairney was a regular at Poole, and striker Tommy Wright has been prolific at all his clubs. One to watch is striker Trevor Caborn who opened his account for the season on Saturday.
Wimborne opened their account on their return to step 3 on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Hanwell at the Wyatt Homes Stadium thanks to Cam Munn's second-half winner. Recent signings Adam Biss and Siph Mdlalose both made their debuts off the bench.
The last season The Magpies and The Citizens were in the same division was 2017-18, in Southern League Division One West with honours even: Winchester won 1-0 at home on a very hot August Bank Holiday Monday, while Wimborne gained 3-0 revenge at (old) Cuthbury on Boxing Day with goals from Oldring, Penny, and Toby Holmes.
Back to Wednesday when both teams will be keen to build on their results from Saturday. Can Tim's team bag an away point or three? Can Flits keep a second clean sheet? Can Fletch open his account? The best way to find out is to be there. Come on you Maggies!
Venue: Winklebury football complex RG23 8BF
Admission: adults £13.50, concessions £10, students & U18s £6, 12-15s £3.50, U12s free.
