Graham's Match Preview -
Wimborne Town vs Hanwell Town
Southern League Premier South - Sat 10 August 2024 3pm
It's been fifteen weeks since that never-to-be-forgotten afternoon at Melksham when goals by Harry Baker, Sam Roberts and Harry Morgan gave the mighty Magpies victory in front of their massed travelling support. That victory clinched the Division One South championship (a first title for 24 years) and promotion back to the Southern Premier South at Step 3 after two seasons in Division One South.
Manager Tim Sills has strengthened his squad by recruiting flying winger Matty Burrows, right-back Drew Eccott-Young, striker Will Fletcher, and central defender Harvey Wright who have all impressed since pre-season games began on July 9th.
Wimborne's pre-season results:
- Verwood 0 - 4 Magpies - Steve Moore Trophy
- Magpies 2 - 4 Eastleigh
- Magpies 0 - 0 Weymouth
- Magpies 3 - 3 Salisbury
- Hamworthy Recreation 1 - 4 Magpies
- Bashley 3 - 6 Magpies
- Magpies 1 - 4 AFCBournemouth Development.
But now it's time for the real games to begin, and we start our league campaign at the Wyatt Homes Stadium with a first-ever match against west London side Hanwell Town. The Geordies were formed just over 100 years ago by a group of Newcastle United supporters who were working on the railways.
Manager Chris Moore's team have spent two seasons in the SL Premier South after winning the Isthmian League South Central play-off and being transferred across to the Southern League at Step 3. In 2022-23, Moore's first season in sole charge (he became joint manager in 2018-19), Hanwell finished 14th with a W14 D8 L20 record (ahead of Salisbury 15th, and Gosport 17th).
Last season The Geordies finished 17th with a W12 D12 L18 GF 64 GA 71 record. They finished on the same points as Plymouth Parkway and Beaconsfield who were in the 4th relegation spot - relegated with 48 points which shows what a tough division this will be! Hanwell's away record (W7 D6 L8) was better than their home record (W5 D6 L10). They started last season like a train with 3-1 victories at Basingstoke then Didcot with 6 different players scoring. During the season Hanwell won 3-0 at Tatnam, drew at champions Chesham, but lost 1-2 at Dorchester (Will Fletcher scored the winner), and 3-5 at Totton (Matty Burrows bagged a hat-trick!). Hanwell's average home league attendance was 329.
A familiar name in Moore's squad is goalkeeper Sam Beasant, who previously played against us for Chesham. Sam was chosen for the Premier South's team of the season for 2023-24, and was voted supporters' player of the season. He is the son of former Wimbledon and England keeper Dave. Hanwell announced a quintuple of signings on 31st July: midfielder Nathanael Boayke, striker Ezekiel Coker, centre-back Rudi Pache, striker Alfie Pendlebury, and right-back Joe Wilson. But probably missing for this game will be striker Josh Oyinsan who was recently joint winner of TV's "Love Island".
Like Wimborne, Hanwell's final pre-season game was a home defeat - 1-3 to National South Slough.
Our first home league game last season was a 1-1 draw with Exmouth in front of a Tuesday evening crowd of 601, Sam Jackson scored. Tim's team will need our support if they are to improve on that. You don't want to miss the start of the next step on our journey - after all, it's what Saturday afternoons were made for.
There's plenty of parking at the ground in Ainsley Road BH21 2FU, but if you do decide to park on the nearby streets, please do so respectfully to our neighbours.
The Morebus no.13 runs along Leigh Road from and to The Square in the town centre twice an hour with stops at the bottom of Parmiter Road.
Admission: adults £14, concessions £8, U18s £5, U13s £2. Season tickets are still available.
A packed printed programme will be on sale - it's a whopper!
Weather forecast: sunny intervals; 20oC; 10% chance of rain.
