Grahams Match Report:- Thame United 2 Wimborne Town 4 - Sat 30th Oct 2021 The Buildbase FA Trophy 3rd Round Qualifying - winners £2450 Four seasons ago Matty Holmes' Magpies were dumped out of the F.A. Trophy by Thames' blistering start of four goals in 20 minutes. This season an opening salvo of two goals in twelve minutes by Harry Morgan set James Stokoe's team on the path of sweet revenge. Despite a wobble at the start of the second period, further goals by Curtis Young and Addwell Chipangura steadied the ship as Wimborne progressed to the First Round Proper of the competition for only the second time in their proud history. And I can't conclude my opening paragraph without mentioning more amazing saves by Billy Terrell - brilliance comes as standard with this young man.
With Lewis Beale unwell, Dan Cann and Ben Scorey recovering from injuries, and Mark Jamison unavailable, manager Stokoe brought Tom Bragg and Billy Maybury into his starting XI. Playing without a recognised striker, Wimborne made the perfect start. Jamie Henry picked out Young on the right wing, he raced into the area, hit a low shot from an acute angle which keeper Hill did well to parry before Morgan swept the rebound into the net - and just 60 seconds on the clock. With confidence high, Wimborne seized control and threatened a second. Regan Mason and Connal Morrison combined on the left; Mason set up Young for a shot; Connal Morrison intercepted and moved the ball to Charlie Gunson whose goal-bound rocket hit Morgan; and interplay with Gunson and Morgan saw another Morrison charge end with the ball whistling over Hill's crossbar. A second goal did come - on 12 minutes. Crisp passing on the left found Gunson near the left by-line, and his pull-back was hit into the net from close-range by Morgan.
Wimborne had had their own way so far, but after Mepham had fired a loose ball over Terrell's bar on the quarter hour mark, Thame played their way into the game. On 20 minutes Blake seized on a weak back- pass only to be denied by the feet of Terrell; the speed of Goss enable him to cross from the left; and in the next attack Morrison made a superb block after Goss again crossed from the left by-line. On 31 minutes Goss had the home side's best opportunity of the half. Mis-control enabled the striker to run one-on-one at Terrell only for the young stopper to make a terrific sprawling save. With five minutes left in the half, a quick counter-attack by Thame needed a well-timed sliding tackle by last man Morrison to stop the speedy Goss in his tracks. Blake curled Thames' last effort of the half over the bar before Morrison and Morgan combined for Gunson's rocket to be tipped over by Hill in time added-on. Thame needed to start the second period well - and they did, by scoring in the 47th minute. They moved the ball from right to left before Blake swept the ball beyond Terrell from the edge of the area. The Red Kites sensed an equaliser but a resolute back-line and whole team defending denied them any clear opportunities. In fact it was the visitors who fashioned the best chances. Morrison had a shot blocked before Young added a third on 58 minutes. Gunson, in the centre-circle, played the winger through and he finished superbly.
At the mid-point of the half Gunson's well-hit shot forced an excellent low save by Hill before Young netted the loose ball only to be given marginally offside. Another lung-busting run by Morrison ended with a dangerous cross, and Morgan scrapped to win the ball in midfield before almost slipping Chipangura through as Wimborne looked for a fourth. At the other end, on 73 minutes, Terrell and skipper Scott Arnold combined to deny Thame in a scramble by the post. Wimborne sealed victory on 87 minutes. Dan Strugnell, who had another excellent game - but doesn't he always? - cleared long. The ball somehow eluded the home side's central defenders before a discombobulated Hill allowed Addwell to walk the ball into the empty net. Terrell then drew gasps from the crowd when he saved a downward header on the line, but was beaten for a second time in time added-on by another header.
It was a cracking cup-tie with 29 goal attempts. Your reporter could run through the whole team telling you how well everyone played but just take it from me that this was Wimborne's best performance of the season. The team are running into form with some vital games ahead. Needless to say, it was a happy, noisy coach journey back to Dorset. Now that's what I call a team performance!

Apologies that only the first part of the post-match interview with James is available. Wayne did the filming and had problems with memory on his mobile device. It was probably the best interview I've ever done, certainly on a par with Parkinson / Ali in the early 70s - but then you'll have to take my word for it
