I've been interested in the progress of chippenham town in recent times. A club playing in national league South from a market town with a modest population and averaging a modest 698 at home amongst the much better supported clubs. It strikes me that they are a useful template for us, given the boards stated ambition to reach the same level. They're not pulling up any trees but neither are they ever near the drop zone and last night in fact were seconds away from winning at high flying truro. Anyone know if they have a rich sugar daddy? I'm just impressed that a club from a smallish back water Wiltshire town are punching at step 2 level with Torquay and worthing.

was intrigued by your post bezza so had a look on their website, have to say its a brilliant website much better than wtfc, well worth a look, also maybe indicates a club were all the "little"things are done right(doubt their prog matches ours tho haha)plenty of sponsors but didnt appear to be a big big benefactor, new clubhouse but didnt actually look as good as ours. One little snippet i did notice, in their final seasons in southern prem they signed pro striker from league two and he went onto win the golden boot in southern prem league in 15/16 season!!!

Eastleigh signed Vincent Harper from Chippenham Town, so suspect there would have been a small transfer fee and he is now with Exeter City, so they may also have been a sell-on clause, both of which would have helped to boost their coffers!

Signing a forward with a proven goal scoring record from a higher level is probably the way to go although risky. But if you want National League status that's what you have to do , be bold and take a risk. [ eg Charlie Austin and Brett Pitman are two examples] Its obvious that the forwards we have, although competent, are not going to set the world alight with their goal scoring feats. They may come up trumps with the odd game but not on a consistent basis. Finding that player though, without upsetting the rest of the team and blowing the budget, is where that genius decision lies.

I keep reading about Pitman but that’s one to let go of I’m afraid. Brett left Shaftesbury at the end of last season when they got promoted as he can’t commit to the Southern league, amount of traveling etc because he works at AFC Bournemouth. That’s why he dropped back down to the Wessex league with Baffins which is his main club this season, he recently dual signed with Shaftesbury just to play midweek games occasionally if it suits all parties.

Good points gemma, idont think it's about pitman specifically it's about the mindset of the club looking at players like pitman.

I went over to watch Bemerton v Tavistock last night(Tavistock didnt put a tenth of the effort in they did against us at their place last season-they were dreadful).Conor had very little to do but as per, what he did was assured. Smudgers Son Joe Smith scored another two having scored 50 in wessex one last season. Big step up but certainly one to be aware of -Bemmy looked a good side.

I think if you have the knack of putting the ball in the back of the net you will score goals at any level. We got Toby Holmes in from Parley Sports and he wasn't to bad.
